Monday Jan. 1, 2007 – life, reason and truth

-2C/29F, calm, sunny and solitary; Gusta roamed along the lagoon

to those who celebrated lots last night, a few sober thoughts to begin your year; to those who tucked in early as did Gusta and I, have a wonderful clear headed day; to those who are traveling this week, safe journey home; to those in my musing life already, hi; to those just joining, welcome

do you ever read the hand written notes on greeting cards before you toss them in a drawer, on a pile or in the trash? do you read, and re-read, the words inside the cover of the book you got? the book, that is far less important than the inscription it carries, the card worthless but for its personal message

this holiday season just past, passed by like a plane pass overhead, a high-level overview, passing by so many important things – a time of rote traditions, 2 months of music on the radio and missing people who must be away – now passed and over

if only for a few minutes every morning, to gaze upon the day (or year) that awaits our first move; like a game of chess, how do we open?

this is the last day of all that, the first day of this new thing we’ve yet to take out for a spin, no test drive required - cliché is everywhere; the start, the future, the opening, the beginning; a new year, a fresh page, a blank canvas

this year begins with people suffering in every corner of the planet, this year begins with the division between rich and poor more graphic than ever, this year begins with conflict and war in far too many places to consider acceptable; for most of us, those concerns are left to our leaders (now there is a sobering thought) while we focus on equally important ‘close to home’ matters such as our relationships with our children, our partners and our contemporaries; the balance of schedules and organizations and values – in everyone’s life – is really important too; it is not the stuff that makes the world go round, but maybe it is why the world goes round

you and I can each make a difference this year if we give it some effort; the basis for our future as a planet, as a people, as families, as friends, as colleagues, as lovers – is to think every day

yes think every day; sometimes to do something, sometimes not to do anything, but every day, to think a little bit – not all day, that might be too hard, but how about just a little?

yes, think

not lots, but a little

each day of the year we can go through motions, or

we can take some time to think

to think about life, reason and truth

Somewhere else you indicated you would be willing to send along a picture of Gusta. Since I am the step-parent to a pair of cats, I count on Gusta's adventures as a vicarious "dog parent" exercise, ... sooo if you've a mind, then pingcat@shaw.ca would do just fine.

Thanks
